The Washington Post: James Edward Murray announced as head of business development

Press Release | The Washington Post

The Washington Post has announced the addition of James Edward Murray as director and head of business development, a newly created role designed to drive growth across the company through initiatives and innovative partnerships.

Murray was most recently the founder and CEO of Therify, a B2B mental health startup backed by Y Combinator, Looking Glass Capital, and Jumpstart Nova. Under his leadership, Therify grew from an idea into a global platform with a premium network of more than 3,000 mental health providers across 30 U.S. states, Canada and the Philippines. The company has been featured in Inc. Magazine, Fortune and TechCrunch for its work to expand access to mental health care, and Murray was named to Black Health Connect’s 40 Under 40 for his entrepreneurial innovation and leadership.

Murray will be a part of The Post’s Growth organization, reporting to Head of Partnerships Peter Elkins-Williams.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with James,” shared Elkins-Williams. “His proven track record for leading during major industry shifts combined with his ability to drive innovation at startup speed will undoubtedly benefit The Post’s reinvention of news.”

Before founding Therify, Murray was at Meta, where he led U.S. partnerships with digital-native news publishers. While there, he helped drive initiatives focused on expanding the distribution and monetization of video content on the platform and also created and incubated Our Voices, Our Power, a program dedicated to equipping the next generation of journalists and news publishers with the tools and knowledge to grow their audiences on Facebook.

Murray also previously worked on the strategy and business development team at Time Inc. and held a partnerships role at PubMatic, where he helped news publishers implement programmatic advertising as a core growth strategy. He holds a B.A. from Howard University and an M.B.A. from Vanderbilt University. Murray began this week, and will be based in Washington, D.C.
